Ive read a lot of reviews of this film both on this site and in print and other forms and I believe the majority of people just dont understand what the film is about.
Everyone refers to the fact that it is not as good as the book or it doesnt follow the book or its not as scary as the book. This film needs to be viewed without thinking or mentioning the book. It is a wonderful cinematic masterpiece in which the acting directing and cinematography produce a feel that i beleive is unparalleled in the horror/phycological thriller genre. For a start Steven King stories are over exaggerated, predictable and totally stupid featuring monsters and supernatural activity that is so unbelievable its almost humorous. Keeping that in mind I was so refreshed to see the brilliant Kubrick take a completely different spin on the movie.
This film is about the Psychological effects of solitude and differing environments on a normal man. I believe its not a cheesy horror film about an evil house. Although the little boy who can see the future is pretty stupid the scenes with Jack Nicholson are so believable and so well acted and directed this film sends chills down your spine. Its about mental insanity and has echoes in films such as fight club and M Nigh Shylamans the Sixth sense.
I think that if people watch this film and look at it as a cheesy horror flick they will take nothing from it. Look at it as a human behaviour study mixed with elements of uncertainty and supernatural or halucinagenic imagery and you will take heaps more out of it.
